Doug Millar

Senior Scientist - Process Development Amgen Inc.

As part of the small molecule process development group at Amgen, I’m implementing biocatalytic strategies to enable new synthetic routes while increasing sustainability. During my PhD advised by Michelle Chang at UC-Berkeley, I developed a skillset in enzyme discovery, biochemistry, and mechanism-guided engineering. At Codexis, I developed a robust HTP protein engineering platform to support their biotherapeutic pipeline. Altogether, I can leverage my broad expertise to lead end-to-end implementation of biocatalytic strategies.

Panel: Embedding Biocatalysis Upstream, When Does It Add Value & How Do You Make It Stick?
12:10 pm
  • When is the right stage to introduce biocatalysis in the development pipeline?
  • How are organizations balancing early investment with high attrition risk?
  • What has worked (and failed) when trying to shift from late-stage to early-stage adoption?
  • How do you align chemists, biologists, and process teams around a shared approach?
Wednesday 30th September 2026
Leveraging Metagenomic Data to Identify Better Enzyme Starting Points & Improve Screening Success
9:30 am
  • Identify key limitations in current enzyme discovery approaches that hinder the implementation of biocatalysis
  • Explore how emerging computational approaches are enabling smarter selection of enzyme sequences from vast sequence space
  • Learn how to design diverse yet functional libraries to maximize success across multiple transformations
